i tink i understd y A/P Hawkins tinks tt there isn't a problem wif the equating social interactions & social well-being.

as i dig out all e history o e study, i found tt actually the definition of social well-being had been established from the very start as how well the child interacts wif e others. So in A/P Hawkins opinion wat i'm currently doing, finding scales to measure interactions, is essentially correct.

my problem is that i find the definition is wrong, how can u equate social well-being with simply social interactions. So now i've 2 dig further & find how they came up wif the definition. was there any study tt established that social well-being is social interactions.

i need 2 get this point across to the RAs.

now i can write the email.

i shld have done a beta job at looking at the study's history but i didnt....i was busy trying my best to brush up on the topic....i was trying very hard not 2 look stupid....

i shld have had a beta grasp o e study if i studied e history of the study.

now i've 2 b thick-skinned & ask them abt e history....there isn't a lot o things written in e minutes....

however since absolutely nothing can be equated....

tt's y we have e simple relationship o interactions/relationships o child wif others = social well-being o e child

but r there studies supporting this relationship?

fr my lit search, relationships/interactions r related to social well-being & they can predict 2 a certain extent how socially well e child is......

so is tt simple relationship valid????

discussion wif mas....

interactions not equals to social well-being.....

there's more to social well-being then interactions.....

same rationale fr HS.....

Annie..... says:
i'm asking u abt e study
Annie..... says:
i'm stuck on e study
Annie..... says:
i'm not sure if when i measure the interactions o chidl & others, m i measurin gtheir social well-being
topaz says:
social skills is more of interaction
topaz says:
thats my 2 cents opinion la.
topaz says:
may not be correct
Annie..... says:
so when i measure how well they interact & also their relationship wif others
Annie..... says:
i can tell u their social well-being?
topaz says:
how abt u chaange it to social skills instead?
Annie..... says:
change wat 2 social skills?
topaz says:
social well being social skills
Annie..... says:
my study is trying 2 find e social well-being
Annie..... says:
not 2 find social skills
topaz says:
lemme aks my mates here.
topaz says:
hang on
Annie..... says:
great
topaz says:
okie they say social well being is like examining their social interaction btw children n teachers n parents beyond the acad context
Annie..... says:
so tt means
topaz says:
?
Annie..... says:
wheni measure all e social interactions btw children, teacher, parent, siblings etc etc
topaz says:
correct!
Annie..... says:
it is social well-being?
Annie..... says:
really?
topaz says:
hmmm!
Annie..... says:
tt's hawkins' pt o view also.....
topaz says:
i think so, thats what they told me

Annie says:
u've time 2 read my CSEWS blog?
Annie says:
look at e most recent 1
Annie says:
on well being & interations
Annie says:
interactions i mean
KJ: innocence says:
tell me what you want me to look out for in particular
Annie says:
interactions/relationships r only related 2 well-being
Annie says:
but in my study i'm measuring interactions/relationships
Annie says:
then i'm supposed 2 conclude on e social well-being o e chidl
KJ: innocence says:
no, I mean, you want me to lok out for grammar, flow, punctuation...
Annie says:
no i'm trying 2 ask there's a missing part between interactions/relationships & well-being....
Annie says:
but i juz can't pin it.....
Annie says:
& i 1 2 tell my RA but he dun tink there's anything missing...
Annie says:
i'm being sitting on e issue 4 e longest time...
KJ: innocence says:
intellectual capacity? tell me what you are looking for?
Annie says:
i 1 2 ask u if my rationale tt smething is amiss between e interactions & well-being is correct or not
Annie says:
but i dunno wat is amiss.....
KJ: innocence says:
yeah I got that part. I'm just wondering what you feel is missing... as in, can you describe it vaguely even.
Annie says:
i ask my other ROs they tink so 2....
Annie says:
tt's e pt....
Annie says:
i dunno....
KJ: innocence says:
well, I think intellectual capacity is one
Annie says:
????
Annie says:
how intelligent a person is
Annie says:
affects social well-being?
KJ: innocence says:
Of course, it shapes the way we view the world
KJ: innocence says:
and it affects the way people view us
KJ: innocence says:
the relative intellectuality is important.
KJ: innocence says:
v smart pp don't mix with lower ed pp well, and vv
Annie says:
so when i measure their interactions wif diff pple in their lives
Annie says:
i can safely say tt i'm measuring their social well-being?
KJ: innocence says:
There's the Heisenberg principle of uncertainty. When you observe or measure something, you change it
KJ: innocence says:
so you can't safely say that you are measuring their social well-being accurately
Annie says:
however in a nutshell, with all other things being constant
Annie says:
i can say tt as long as i can measure how well e child interacts wif e other pple i can tell u how their social well-being is rite?
KJ: innocence says:
hm...
KJ: innocence says:
i guess,
KJ: innocence says:
but you'll have to ask a real psychologist
Annie says:
tt's e trouble here
Annie says:
my RA is a psychologist la
Annie says:
then he say tt we r measuring social well-being
Annie says:
when we measure the interactions/relationship
KJ: innocence says:
then ask other psychologists lor.
Annie says:
tt's y i'm tapping on all my sources la
Annie says:
but fr a layman's pt o view?
KJ: innocence says:
Tough question. Is social interactivity = social well-being? it then really depends o definition. What you mean by well-being
KJ: innocence says:
if you tell me his well-being means how well a person interacts, then yeah, it would have to be yes.
Annie says:
ok
Annie says:
but tt's my problem
Annie says:
i tink tt definition is not rite
Annie says:
e definition was passed down fr e previous person doing e student
KJ: innocence says:
so what is it that you wish to measure specifically?
Annie says:
e social well-being loh
Annie says:
they define it as measuring how well e child interacts wif others
Annie says:
then i can't find any lit search tt supports e pt tt social well being is e interaction
KJ: innocence says:
then I can't help anymore...
KJ: innocence says:
ask other psychologists lor. psychs are specialists, so your RA may not be a social psych-ist
Annie says:
but in ur opinion social well-being shldn't b juz measuring interactions rite?
KJ: innocence says:
No. How well a person interacts, may not equate to how well a person fits the culture or situation. So even though I can interact very well with my friends, I may hate school for the simple reason that I don't like studying.
Annie says:
but socially, u r doing gd
Annie says:
even though u dun like studying
KJ: innocence says:
I guess that's correct
Annie says:
dun mind if i put it up on CSEWS rite?
KJ: innocence says:
go ahead, but I'm not a psych-ist, so it won't carry weight
Annie says:
no worries la...
Annie says:
all these r tinking aloud

when we measure interactions/relationships between child & others, r we measuring e social well-being o e child?

fr e limited lit search tt i've done, interactions/relationships r only related to well-being......they may predict but is not exactly e well-being.....

but in hawkins' opinion when we measure the interactions/relationships, we r measuring the social well-being......

mtg on 14.01.05

note 2 myself:

mtg on 14.01.05 at A/P Hawkins' office in NIE

looked at e different scales (include MSLSS, SLSS, ICQ, loneliness & social dissatisfaction scale, & another scale fr e HK article)

basically decided tt MSLSS looks relevant

will look at e NRI, yet 2 get e scale fr e author.....

discussed e diff bet quantitaitve & qualitative qns.....

bottom line, e behavior scales only list e types/frequecies o behavior......

so we need 2 measure e interactions.....

another scale NRI
